Gottfried: "Our Guys Gave Us Great Effort"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media after the loss to Wake Forest.

Opening Statement...
I will start off and say obviously I am disappointed for our players. I thought our guys played really hard and didn't always play well. I think we can play smarter at times but I thought our guys gave us a great effort. I am proud of our players, disappointed for them.

We had three or four situations in that game, I think, where a shot or two that falls our way probably changes the momentum, changes thins late in the game. I think defensively we are giving points away at times. We are not going to shut anybody out, we know that, but I think we have had some mental errors defensively that -- it just seems like those add up against us pretty quick, so that has got to get better.

But I thought our guys gave us a great effort and you have got to give Wake a lot of credit. They stepped up and made some big shots late in the game. Give credit for that.

On Terry Henderson's steal late that was ruled out of bounds...
[The referee] said he didn't need to review it. He had it for sure. Have you watched it?

Go watch it, yeah. Life moves on.

On zone defense...
I still think we are giving up penetration too much, whether in a man or the zone. It doesn't really matter there. I thought at times it was really good and at times we are still kind of making some of the same errors. Whether it is a ball screen involved. It is not always a ball screen. Sometimes it is other things. So we have just got to keep working at it and get better and these young guys have to learn what we are doing.

On shot selection...
I thought it was pretty good. A couple of those, I think Maverick missed one or two in there. I think Terry missed a pretty good one in there. Shot selections weren't bad. Sometimes you are taking good shots, you just don't make them. It is just part of basketball.

On short turnaround to Duke game Monday...
We did it last week we are going to have to do it again. The turnaround is just the way the league schedule comes out and so we will practice [Sunday] and get ready to play on Monday.

Abdul-Malik Abu's play...
Sometimes it is just the way the game is. A guy will get really hot and then for whatever reason, maybe they made adjustments, maybe we need to get him the ball and make some shots. It just doesn't always -- you get 18 in one half that doesn't mean you are going to get 36. It is just part of the game sometimes.

All I can say, I thought we got pretty good shots most of the game. Very rarely did I think there were bad shots by our team. I don't think that was a factor whatsoever. I thought we had good shots at times. we just didn't make them.

John Collins' play...
Good player. Yeah, he is a good player. You know, most of those guys have played some now. On their team they have got the two transfer guys I think have helped them greatly. That are better just because their team is a little bit older. They have got a lot more experience than they have in the past.

I watched that tape against Miami, and they just pounded Miami. I mean, just beat them like a drum -- it wasn't even close -- so they had our attention. They have gotten better and give credit. We will have a chance to play them again.

On four-guard lineup...
We went to it early in the game too. Most of the first half we played four guards so -- it was most of the game we had four guards. It has been good for us.

Good against Pitt. Good against Virginia Tech. It has been good for our team so that is part of us still trying to figure out our team. That has been good for us at times.
