Chancellor Randy Woodson
Kevin Keatts is an exceptional basketball coach with a long track record of success.

All you have to do is spend five minutes with Kevin and you'll see that there's something different about this man, something special.

He has what it takes to be successful in a somewhat competitive athletic conference.

He's built winning cultures that's won at the highest level in all of his previous positions.

This is an important moment for our men's basketball program.  We know that we've found the architect to help us achieve our goals.  We're thrilled to welcome Kevin and his family to NC State.

NC State AD Debbie Yow
This is a special time in the history of NC State men's basketball.

It became increasingly clear that coach Keatts possessed the pedigree and vision to elevate our program.

His commitment to player development, academics, and recruiting all add up to him being a terrific fit for NC State.

He has what I call the stuff.  The right mindset, the ability, and the wisdom to maximize every opportunity for success.

NC State Head Coach Kevin Keatts
It's a great day to be a part of Wolfpack Nation.

I have two commitments right now... I want to tell you on the day that I have this press conference... I have verbal commitments from a 2022 recruit and a 2026 recruit (his sons).

When you look at my three years at UNC Wilmington they were unbelievable. We won three regular season championships, won two tournament championships, and made two NCAA Tournaments.  I enjoyed the fans and the city.

I grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia... it's about an hour and 45 minutes from here. I grew up in ACC country... growing up, I became a huge NC State fan.  Not a Virginia fan. Not a Virginia Tech fan, but a NC State fan.

When you think about NC State and Raleigh, I want you to think about the great tradition they have.  The former players... David Thompson. A passionate fanbase... everybody complains about it, but I love it.  I think it's the best thing in the world.

When you talk about two national championships, three Final Fours, 14 Sweet Sixteens, 17 conference championships. Why not NC State?  It's a beautiful place, and a beautiful place to bring my family. That's what I thought about when I had the chance to take this job.

That's what NC State basketball is. That's what I want to bring back to NC State basketball.

I had an opportunity to meet with these guys. I shut everybody out because I wanted a private conversation with my new team.  I'll share some things but not everything... we talked about commitment, we talked about investing in yourself.  We talked about accountability.

If you're late, you'l be up at 6:00 in the morning. That means I'll be up at 6:00 in the morning. That's not a good thing.

We talk about playing for the front of the jersey... I heard it from coach Pitino.  It's really true. If you play for the front of the jersey, which is NC State, then the back will be great.

This is a tremendous program.

When I took the job at Wilmington we were picked ninth out of tenth in the league, and the only reason we were picked ninth was because Elon just joined the conference two months before.

The next year we were picked sixth, and we went 25-9 and were the regular season champions and tournament champions.

I think everybody in the CAA wised up and understood one thing and I want you guys to understand this about your new coach. Kevin Keatts is a winner, and I've always been that. I'm not bragging about being a winner and saying I'm the best coach in the world and can do this better than somebody else. But I do know how to motivate guys and win games.

Our last year we were picked No. 1 and that's tough... we went 29-6, regular season champions, tournament champions, and went to the NCAA.  I'll tell you guys this in my closing.  I'm excited about the opportunity to coach here. This is an unbelievable place. I want to thank our Director of Athletics for giving me the opportunity, Chancellor Woodson... the committee.

No matter what they say about us, no matter what they think about us. Understand that with time, hard work, commitment, and fan support... we will be champions again. I promise you guys that.
