PREVIEW: Camp Doeren

Dave Doeren and staff will kick off their 5th year of summer camps at NC State beginning on Friday. Combining the past results of summer camp season with the way this recruiting cycle is lining up could mean a lot of excitement for the months of June and July. Dave Doeren and staff will kick off their 5th year of summer camps at NC State beginning on Friday.  Combining the past results of summer camp season with the way this recruiting cycle is lining up could mean a lot of excitement for the months of June and July.  Pack Pride takes a look back to past camp success and previews the upcoming months.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The 5th annual Dave Doeren football camps will begin Friday, June 9th and continue on the 10th, 16th, 17th and 24th with one-day camps.  There will be an OL/DL camp as well as a 7v7 camp on June 16th, a specialist camp on June 17th and a team 7v7 tournament on June 23rd.

During the one-day camp sessions each camper goes through standard testing-40 yard dash, shuttle, vertical leap, broad jump-as well as standard measurements-height, weight, wingspan.  From there the campers will break up into position groups where they’ll work with the NC State coach for that particular position while going through drills.

Once individual drills are done the campers will then get to the highlight of each camp period—the one-on-ones.  The OL and DL will head off to the indoor practice facility to go head to head under the guidance of new DL coach Kevin Patrick and OL coach Dwayne Ledford.  The LBers and TEs will square off as well as the DBs and WRs.  It’s usually during those one-on-ones where you’ll see specific targets paired up with or against one another and decisions about offers get made.

If history holds true the staff will also host an elite camp of sorts in late July that in the past has been titled ‘Alpha Wolf Showcase’.

PAST INDICATORS
Since his arrival at NC State Dave Doeren and his staff have made camp season a huge piece of their recruiting efforts.  Each summer has seen a multitude of camp days on the schedule with the classic one-day camps as the staple but also mixing in specialist camps, OL/DL camps and 7v7 tournaments.  There is, of course, little doubt that this strategy is employed to provide ample opportunity and versatility to attract as many would-be prospects as possible to Raleigh.

During this camp-season the staff will decide to offer or move on from a prospect based on physical performance or otherwise, get their first up close look at many rising prospects, host some of their top targets on unofficial visits (whether they decide to work out or not), meet new prospects that get bused in from all over the region, unearth some hidden talent that hasn’t received proper exposure and very likely collect a few commitments.

CLOSING TIME?
Dave Doeren’s first camp season in 2013 seemingly couldn’t have gone any better.  The staff headed into the summer in the top 2-3 for many prospects and ended up taking commitments from 17.  However, that number was likely influenced by the coaching change that had occurred just 6 months prior aiding the recruiting effort with a new burst of energy and excitement.

The 2014 camp was the polar opposite with the Pack heading into the summer camp season in the top 2-3 for many prospects but ultimately watching a lot of them commit elsewhere (Emmanuel McGirt, Brian Chaffin, Michael Barnett, Kendall Hinton and, later in the summer Darian Roseboro).

The point is that you never know because very little in the recruiting world is ever stable for long and nothing is guaranteed until signing day; however the potential is very real and almost palpable that the summer camp season of 2017 could go very well for the Pack.

Below is a list of some of the names we believe are likely to make their way to Raleigh over the next 4-8 weeks.  NOTE: This list is strictly Pack Pride's opinion.
