Two Key Match-ups To Watch
When NC State has the ball…
OTs Sean Locklear, Derek Morris, and John McKeon vs. DE Phillip Alexander
Alexander and Safety Terrell Smith have been the few bright spots on a Duke defense that has underachieved this season. Alexander's been a terror at Defensive End, leading the ACC in Sacks with 6 and second in TFLs with 16.5. The NC State Offensive Tackles will have to protect Philip Rivers against Alexander, chiefly Left Tackle, John McKeon, who guards the blindside of NC State's most important player. If the Wolfpack can neutralize Alexander and his linemates, look for Rivers to put up huge numbers versus a stingy pass defense. If Duke's in the face of #17 all day long, it could be ACC loss #3 for the Wolfpack.
When Duke has the ball…
RBs Alex Wade and Chris Douglass vs. S Andre Maddox
Wade and Douglass have performed admirably for Duke this year, often generating yards out of an unbalanced passing offense. With Carl Franks gone, look for these two workhorse to see more carries, in what could be an attempt to keep NC State and their vaunted offense off the field. Maddox has been the "last line of defense" a bit too much this year and while he's often come up with big plays, NC State will need others to step up on Saturday. Whoever wins this battle will have the upperhand on the outcome of this game.
Keep Your Eye On
NC State RB Reggie Davis – After weeks of discussion, true freshman Reggie Davis should see his first action of the year versus the Blue Devils. He put up strong numbers in preseason scrimmages and some say he could have a big game against Duke. Can he give NC State a solid #2 option behind the often-injured T.A. McLendon? We'll know late Saturday afternoon.
Duke S Terrell Smith – Smith's having an outstanding season for the Blue Devils, leading the ACC in tackles per game (12.6) and among the league's leaders in total tackles. Smith will need his "A" game on Saturday, with the Wolfpack boasting what some consider the best group of skill position players in the league.
