Schaeffer has a Final Five

Deerfield Beach (FL) Quarterback Brent Schaeffer has had an outstanding senior season, leading his team to the state semifinals against (Orlando) Edgewater this weekend. <P> StateFans was able to reach Brent for an update on how his college recruitment has progressed.

"I've cut it down to Tennessee, Kansas State, N.C. State, Michigan State, and South Florida," Brent said. "I've had home visits this week with Tennessee, Michigan State, and NC State. Those three and K-State are probably recruiting me the hardest."

What's going to be a major factor in Brent's decision? He wants to play early in college and has obviously done a lot of research in determining which schools can make that happen.

"I look at depth charts the most and that's going to be big with me because I want to play. I was looking at Notre Dame but now they start a freshman so I dropped them. I think I can go to South Florida and start next year, but I don't know about the exposure there. K-State I think I could because Ell [Roberson] is leaving and Rivers is leaving NC State too. It's the same with Tennessee and Michigan State. Clausen is leaving and Smoker's leaving Michigan State. At all of them I can probably play early."

So far, Schaeffer has also been able to set up official visits with three lucky programs.

"My first visit is December 19th to Kansas State, then I go to Tennessee on January 16th, and NC State on January 23rd. I'll probably set up the other two for South Florida and Michigan State."

Another high-major D-1 prospect plays for Deerfield Beach, DL Emmanuel Dunbar. Are the two talented teammates interested in playing together in college?

"I know we are going to Tennessee together on a visit, and he was going to NC State with me but he's going this weekend up there. I'm going to wait and go in January to NC State because my parents are going on that one with me."

With over 35 scholarship offers and a NC State making the final cut, what specifically does Brent like about the Wolfpack?

"Doc Holliday is recruiting me for NC State. He came by on Tuesday and he's real cool. I like him and NC State. I know Greg Golden, Sterling Hicks, James Martin, and Tramain Hall from all up there. I just like that offense they run and all the weapons they have."

Another team who appears to be in strong contention is the Volunteers. One of the premier programs in the country, Tennessee looks to be in great shape with Schaeffer.

"Tennessee has good exposure and the coaches are good. They have a lot of young players who can play too. I think my parents like them."

Brent stated that he will take all five of his visits before making his decision, which will likely be near signing day.
