Simmons and Bland Lead Trojans to Victory

Shallotte, NC --Power Forward Cedric Simmons and Forward Chris Bland both post double-doubles in West Brunswick's 63-43 win over rival North Brunswick.

Game Outlook: Led by a 21 point, 16 rebound performance from senior forward Chris Bland, the West Brunswick Trojans defeated North Brunswick 63-43 Wednesday night in Shallotte. North Carolina State signee Cedric Simmons chipped in 15 points, 15 rebounds, and seven blocks.

Taking advantage of the Scorpion 2-3 zone defense which continuously collapsed around Simmons, Bland scored on layups, tip-ins, and mid-range jumpers to help the Trojans build a comfortable first quarter lead which they never relinquished. West Brunswick led 15-4 heading into the second quarter. West mantained a double-digit lead throughout the half. The two teams headed into the locker room with the Trojans leading 32-16.

The Scorpions stayed in the 2-3 zone despite its ineffectiveness in the first half, seemingly content to allow Simmons' teammates easy looks at the basket. Trojan guards Jerek Hewett and Ray Bland were beneficiaries of the attention Simmons attracted in the paint, slashing to the basket for a series of uncontested layups in the second half. The Trojans also dominated the paint throughout the course of the game creating many second chance opportunities on the offensive end and limiting the Scorpions to one shot on the defensive glass. A 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter put the game out of reach and the Trojans cruised to its second consecutive victory.

Simmons Evaluation: In what has thus far been a series of games where he has faced double and triple-teams, Simmons continued to display patience and poise. Simmons counted a mid-range jumper, a two-handed jam off a missed shot attempt, and a big-time baby hook off the left baseline during the Trojan run in the fourth quarter. For the game, Simmons made 6 of 11 shots and showed improvement in his free throw shooting converting on 3 of 4 for the game. Simmons also mantained total control of the lane corralling 15 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass. He also blocked seven Scorpion shots and altering numerous additional attempts. He continues to show a knack for blocking shots and keeping the ball in play for his teammates to control. Simmons also contributed two assists on passes from the high post. Simmons also showed a fiery side to his personality, becoming visibly upset after being undercut on an alley-oop attempt and no foul being called.

Special Note: The Trojans will be in action next weekend in a tournament in Columbia, South Carolina. Wolfpack fans are reminded that Cedric Simmons and the West Brunswick Trojans will be participating in the Glaxo Smith Kline holiday tournament on the weekend of December 27th-28th.
