StateFans: How have your visits been going?
Jerod Mayo: "Pretty good, I've been on three of them so far, and I go the 16th of January to Tennessee and [Virginia] Tech the next week."
SF: What do you like about those two schools?
JM: "Tennessee is always in the top 25 and have a real good football program. Education, the stadium, it's just sounds like a good place. Tech is an in-state school and has a good education. I'm thinking of majoring in computer science and it's a good technical school. Their program is pretty good. They've had a few troubles this year though. They started out strong but kind of fell off a bit at the end of the season."
SF: What about all the schools on your list... are any of them sticking out to you?
JM: "Well, of course UVA and Tech are going to have a little edge because they are the in-state schools so the other teams are going to have to overcome them. Those two and I really like NC State a whole lot too."
SF: So you like those three the best?
JM: "Yea, I like those three the best. I went to Purdue and really liked it, but the location is just so bad."
SF: So location will matter then I assume?
JM: "I don't mind going out and traveling because you got to do it sometime, but most of the schools I'm looking at are close. NC State is actually closer to Hampton then Tech, and it's about the same distance as UVA. So they are all pretty close."
SF: What did you like about your NC State visit?
JM: "Well they had the best facilities I've ever seen. The coaches are real nice too. Their linebackers are a little smaller then everyone else... they like the speed 'backers. I met some recruits down there like Demario Pressley. We went on the UVA visit together too."
SF: How did you guys like the UVA visit?
JM: "It was nice, but it wasn't like the NC State visit. The NC State visit was my best visit. I just had a better time. When we were at UVA it started snowing, and we really couldn't do anything. Me and Demario talked for a long time about both visits. Our parents like each other and they talked. I don't think we are going on any other visits together though."
SF: Have any coaches really stood out to you or have been persistent?
JM: "All of them have been persistent but Coach Diaz (NC State) is the youngest. He's just like my older brother [laughing], like he's about twenty-five years old. Coach London at UVA seems like a father figure to those guys. Coach Cavanaugh (VT) has the most experience. I really just like them all to tell you the truth."
SF: So what kind of timeframe do you have?
JM: "I know I'm going to take all my visits. I think that after the Tech visit I may take a week off and think about everything. I don't think I'll wait until signing day, but probably a week to just make sure I choose the right school."
SF: Are you qualified?
JM: "I'm fully qualified."
SF: How did you do on this season, stat-wise?
JM: "I had 119 tackles, 91 solo, 8 sacks, 2 picks, and then I had five forced fumbles. I made first-team all-state too."
SF: Which school do you think has made the best impression on you so far? Maybe the school that has surprised you the most with how they have handled your recruitment.
JM: "I think the biggest surprise has to be NC State. Because I really didn't know that much about NC State or my family didn't either. But when I visited there we learned a lot about NC State. My family really liked the school, it's not too far away, and if I went there they could come see me play."
SF: So if you had to pick one school right now, who do you think it would be?
JM: "[Laughing] To tell you the truth I couldn't. It's going to be a tough decision to make and I'm just not ready."
