FSU Scouting Report

Tim Pickett was held to 10 points in game 1
NC State vs. Florida State Round 1: Levi Watkins hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute to go to put North Carolina State ahead to stay and help the Wolfpack beat Florida State 58-53 Jan. 11 in Tallahassee. Al Thornton's 3-pointer from the corner with 1:34 left capped a 9-0 run that gave Florida State a 53-52 lead, its only advantage of the second half. Watkins, who scored 13 points off the bench, gave the Wolfpack the lead back 25 seconds later. After Watkins' basket, Engin Atsur took the ball away from Florida State's Alexander Johnson - one of two Seminoles' turnovers in the final 52 seconds. Florida State then fouled Julius Hodge, who hit two free throws for a 57-53 lead with 27 seconds left. Atsur hit another free throw with 13 seconds left to complete the scoring as the Wolfpack won their 10th straight over Florida State dating back to Jan. 23, 1999.

Head Coach Leonard Hamilton: Leonard Hamilton (226-227) has over 30 years of coaching experience at the highest and most intense levels of basketball. Hamilton is in his second season with FSU and has apparently turned corner with the Seminole program. Highlights from his first year at FSU, included an upset of #5 Duke and inking the #1 recruiting class in the nation.

ACC Play: Florida State showed in the first round of ACC play that they are one of the most improved teams of the year. Senior Tim Pickett has taken the Seminoles on his shoulders in scoring where he is currently fourth in the ACC with a 16.3 points per game average. FSU is currently tied for fourth with North Carolina. They have beaten Maryland, UNC, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Their overall record in the ACC is 4-5.

Probable Starting 5: F – #22 G Tim Pickett (Sr 6-4 207), 16.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.9 apg, 2.4 stp... F – #54 Anthony Richardson (Jr 6-7 189), 8.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg... F – #32 Alexander Johnson (FR 6-10 250), 9.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg... G – #10 Nate Johnson (Sr 6-3 183), 5.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg... F – #1 Michael Joiner (Sr 6-7 238), 6.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg.

FSU's Top Gun: Tim Pickett, who has twice been named the ACC Player of the Week this season, averaged 26.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in two games last week and enters Tuesday night's game against NC State averaging a team leading 16.3 points per game. He scored his career-high of 33 points (25 in the second half) as Florida State defeated No. 15 ranked Georgia Tech Feb. 3 in Tallahassee. He has made 16 3-point field goals in the last three games and leads the ACC with 73 3-point field goals made.

Eleven is Enough: FSU has not beaten the Pack since Jan. 23, 1999. The Seminoles will be looking to break an 11-game losing streak against the Wolfpack. The streak is the Seminoles longest against an ACC team since joining the ACC to begin the 1991-92 season.

Fast Break Points

FSU's All-Time record is 887-660 (.585%)
The Seminoles are looking to gain their fifth victory over a ranked ACC team this season.
Florida State has won two of its last three and four of its last six games.
FSU has not won an ACC road game since March 3, 2001.
Florida State won a school record 12 ACC games during the 1992-93 season.
Real Road Woes: The Seminoles are looking to win for the first time in the last six trips to Raleigh and for the first time in the RBC Center. FSU has not won an ACC road game since March 3, 2001 when the Seminoles won at Clemson (75-63). The Seminoles enter Saturday's game against NC State looking to break a 20-game road losing streak against ACC teams

They Said it:Herb Sendek… "Perhaps some are surprised by Florida State's play; we don't happen to be counted among them. We think they've been good all season long and obviously they're playing good basketball now."

Lenard Hamilton… "We've got a tremendous amount of respect for their defense. They seem to be able to play zone when it's necessary, they seem to be able to play man when it's necessary. They're just a smart, heady team that makes great decisions. That's a tribute to Herb and the fine job he's doing."

Key Match-Up:Pickett's numbers vs. Hodge's numbers. This game comes down to which star player will be at the top of their game on Tuesday night. An off night by either will result in a loss for their team. It's crunch time in the ACC and the cream has risen. Look for both Hodge and Pickett to try to establish their game early. If both players are on, then FSU will not be able match the ability of NC State's other players. Scooter, Melvin et al, excel when Julius is at his best.
