UNC-CH Scouting Report

Felton scored 14 points against NC State
The Match-Up: North Carolina hopes to sweep the season series from NC State when it visits the Wolfpack on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the RBC Center in Raleigh. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. A month ago, UNC defeated the Wolfpack, 68-66 in Chapel Hill. That win broke a four-game losing streak to the Pack. If the Tar Heels lose to NC State, it will mark the first time in 51 years of Atlantic Coast Conference play that Carolina has not swept at least one series from a conference foe.

Head Coach Roy Williams: Roy Williams, the winningest active coach in the country, embarks on his first season as head coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Williams became the UNC coach on April 14, 2003, just one week after leading the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship game. His presence has rejuvenated the UNC program, who have been ranked in the top 20 for most of the 2003-04 season.

January 28th Contest: Raymond Felton scored 14 points and Rashad McCants had 13 to lead Carolina past NC State, 68-66, on Jan. 28 in Chapel Hill. The win was UNC's first in the series since February 2001, breaking a four-game losing streak to the Wolfpack. Sean May had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Carolina.

Probable Starting 5: G/F – #32 Rashad McCants (So 6-4 207), 18.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.0 spg... F/C – #42 Shawn May (So 6-9 260), 16.1 ppg, 9.9 rpg 1.5 bpg ... F – #21 Jawad Williams (Jr 6-9 223), 14.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg... G – #1 Melvin Scott (Jr 6-2 190), 11.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.3 apg... G – #2 Raymond Felton (So 6-1 194), 11.8 ppg, 8.2 apg, 3.5 rpg.

Defensive Heels:Carolina has held its opponents to under 50 percent shooting from the floor in 10 of the last 11 halves (the exception was Georgia Tech in the second half). In seven of those 10 halves, Tar Heel opponents shot under 45 percent. In that string, UNC held Maryland to 30.0 percent in the first half, Duke to 33.3 percent in the second half and Wake Forest to 40.7 percent in the first half.

Fast Break Points

UNC-Ch leads the overall series 125-70 against the Pack
The Tar Heels are ranked #12 in this week's AP poll. The same postion they held on January 28th.
Antawn Jamison boasts the most points scored against NC State by a Tar Heel with 36 in 1998. Rodney Monroe has the Pack high against Carolina, scoring 37 in 1991.
Carolina has won or shared 23 regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 15 ACC Tournament titles.
Ten different Tar Heels have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year
Forty-three Tar Heels have earned All-America honors, including 31 first-team honorees.
Carolina has placed 61 players on the All-ACC first team.
Roy Said It: "It really is difficult (to guard NC State) because you have to cover so much floor area of the court then you normally do. By that I mean the big guy has to go out farther then he would normally do. The little guys not only have to cover way out but they may have to cover somebody in the post area. When they go backdoor they go at full speed, so you are covering a team who's cutters are really going hard. It is an offense that fits that team very, very well."

Game One Stat to Remember: The Tar Heels allowed NC State to shoot nearly 60 percent from the field in the first half but picked up the defensive pressure after halftime. NC State's shooting percentage dropped to 45.5 percent in the second half, and the Wolfpack committed 13 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

Key Match-Up: NC State's Offense vs. UNC's 1-3-1 trap. Carolina took control of the game in Chapel Hill when they went to a 1-3-1 trap in the second half, which helped force 13 turnovers. The Pack will need to look to the basket instead of the wings on their first pass as their offense sets. If NC State can hold their overall turnovers to their goal of 13 or under, the Pack will win this game going away.
