Hannah has Family Ties to the Wolfpack

Hope Mills (NC) South View Jumbo Athlete Jonathan Hannah had a great junior season, as the Tigers once again made it to the state playoffs with Hannah leading the way.

"We made it the third round of the state playoffs again and lost to New Bern," Hannah said. "That was the sixth straight year we lost in the third round of the states. I also made All-Conference and All-Region at Offensive Tackle. Coach asked me to play Tackle because we needed linemen, so I did it for the team."

Jon, who was also named second team All-State at Tight End despite playing just one game at the position, is receiving interest from some of the top schools in the country. Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Ohio State among others are recruiting him, with six programs already extending scholarship offers.

"I now have offers from [NC] State, [North] Carolina, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Duke, and Penn State. The Penn State coach said they would offer me officially in April when they come to my school. I don't really have a favorite or anything... it's too early for that."

Most outsiders believe NC State is in great shape with Hannah because of the family ties he has to Head Coach Chuck Amato and the Wolfpack program. Will that put added pressure on the Hope Mills standout?

"Both of my parents graduated from NC State and are the biggest State fans I've ever met, but they want me to go wherever I feel comfortable and if it's State then that's fine with them. They don't really have a preference though because they like all of the schools that are recruiting me."

Jon's father, Joe Hannah, played defensive line for the Wolfpack from 1976-1979, and Chuck Amato was NC State's defensive coordinator at the time. Mr. Hannah is still fond of his former college coach.

"He has the greatest respect for Coach Amato and he is his favorite coach. He told me that Coach Amato was one of the reasons he went to NC State because it was hard to resist Coach Amato's charm, and I've noticed that too."

NC State Offensive Line Coach Mike Barry is recruiting Hannah for NC State, with the Wolfpack's preference being at tight end early on. Although he's visited the Wolfpack campus on several occasions, the most recent was for NC State's Junior Day.

"We toured the facilities and those were crazy. I believe it's the nicest fieldhouse in the nation. We talked to Coach Amato and watched the State-Carolina basketball game. I had a great time up there."

Although NC State appears to be in terrific shape, two teams also in contention are the North Carolina Tar Heels and Virginia Cavaliers.

"It's kind of funny with my parents being State fans, but for some reason I've always liked Carolina ever since I can remember. I like Coach Bunting and [Running Backs] Coach Powell a lot, and I played with Kyndraus (Guy) who goes there. He's trying to get me there and my cousin [Jason Brown] is the center for them. I'm comfortable with Carolina too."

"I used to live in Virginia before moving to Hope Mills so I like Virginia too. Coach Groh has a great staff and Coach Prince is a nice guy. Just being in Charlottesville is a great area and I could see myself there for four years."

Hannah plans on camping at NC State, and Ohio State this summer while also attending one of the NIKE Camps (either Penn State or Virginia). Don't expect an early decision from Jonathan, as he plans on taking his time and enjoying his recruiting experience.

"It's too early for me to commit now because I have a problem saying 'NO' to everyone. You only get recruited once so I think I want to take my time and enjoy it. I'll take the official visits and decide later in the year."
