OK, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but there was a time, not too distant, when the NC State-North Carolina rivalry was the best thing going in Atlantic Coast Conference basketball. From 1973-89, the two teams both finished in the top three in the league standings 10 times and accounted for the league's only three national titles -- NC State in 1974 and 1983, and UNC in 1982.

Beginning with the 1972-73 season, the teams played 10 times over the next three campaigns, with neither team ever being ranked lower than 14th when they met. During the memorable 1973-74 season, the teams met three times, with both squads being in the top four each time. The average margin of victory in the 10 games was 5.3 points, but that was skewed by a couple of laughers. Seven of the games were decided by four points or less. Read more...
