Sweep! Wolfpack Nine Takes Two from No.1 Texas

Austin, Texas -- NC State's baseball team swept the #1-ranked Texas Longhorns today behind strong pitching performances from Michael Rodgers and Vern Sterry.

NC State began the afternoon by winning Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader 2-0 as Michael Rogers pitched a complete game three-hit shutout. The redshirt-sophomore struck out ten batters on the day and retired the final eighteen Longhorn hitters in order.

The Wolfpack picked up all the offense they would need in the fifth inning on a clutch two-out two-run single by second baseman Tim Holt.

Rogers' outstanding performance in Game 1 was followed by perhaps an even better job on the mound by Wolfpack senior Vern Sterry. Like Rogers, Vern also tossed a three-hit shutout as NC State picked up a 1-0 victory to sweep the #1 ranked Longhorns. Sterry struck out 11 batters while yielding only two walks.

NC State's lone run came in the first inning after DH Brian Kinneberg singled to drive in center fielder Matt Camp.

For the two game series, Rogers and Sterry allowed just 6 hits, struck out 21, and gave up no runs in 18 innings while improving their records to 8-3 and 8-2 on the season respectively. The Wolfpack improved to 31-19 while Texas fell to 46-10 for the 2004 season.

NC State concludes the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at the University of North Carolina.
