In just over a month's time, newly hired Wolfpack head coach Amato pieced together his first recruiting class at NC State in February of 2000. Although generally regarded as the ACC's worst, his initial class was highlighted by a couple of players that went on to become two of the best to ever play at NC State. While there were also a number of disappointments, several others went on to have productive careers for the Pack. Three members of that class project as potential starters in 2004. WR Andy Bertrand, Hialeah, Fla- played in 33 games for NC State, collecting eight receptions for 203 yards and one touchdown. Transferred to McNeese State after 2003 season.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, Birmingham, Ala- two-time all acc selection, holds school record with 200 career receptions and is second only to Torry Holt with 3,119 receiving yards. Fourth round selection by the NY Jets in the 2004 NFL draft.
LB Corrie Dawson, Birmingham, Ala- collected a total of 30 tackles as a freshman and sophomore at NC State. Removed from team in January of 2003 for disciplinary reasons and did not return last season. Dawson is still enrolled at NC State but not listed on roster.
OL Rickey Fowler, Columbus, Ga- Began career at NC State as a DT. Moved to OG during the 2001 season. Red-shirted the 2002 season. Started 9 of 11 games playing at OG in 2003 but missed time due to knee injury. Enters 2004 as potential starter at OG.
FS Troy Graham, Miami, Fla- Academically ineligible as a freshman but has since earned back his fifth year of eligibility. Started as a junior at FS after moving from WR. Collected 91 tackles in 2003. Potential starter at FS in 2004 for the Pack.
QB Olin Hannum, Ephraim, Ut- Backed up QB Philip Rivers in 2000 and 2001. A player with tremendous heart, "the cowboy" contributed any way he could while at NC State. Rushed for better than 300 yards, completed 6 of 14 passes for 102 yards and has 10 tackles on special teams.
K Austin Herbert, Cary, NC- While at NC State Herbert made 8 of 12 FG's, 42 of 49 XP's and even completed a pass for an 81-yard TD against Florida State in 2001. He punted 226 times for 39.47 yard average during his career. Herbert went undrafted in 2004 and hopes to land a free agent contract.
DT Dwayne Herndon, Middlesex, NC- After a year at Hargrave Military Academy, Herndon arrived at NC State in 2001 and enters the 2004 season as a projected starter at DT. He has notched 40 tackles and six tackles-for-loss during two years of action at NC State.
ATH William Johnson, Miami, Fla- Never enrolled at NC State.
FB Chance Moyer, Coker, Ala- Chance has caught 2 passes for nine yards and one score while at NC State. Was thought to have been leaving the program after 2003 but was listed as the starting FB after spring practice.
LB Roger Pollard, Miami, Fla- In 48 games with the Pack, Pollard recorded 104 tackles, two sacks and 8 tackles-for-loss.
OL Reggie Poole, Cedartown, Ga- Started at OG in 2000 but was declared academically ineligible and transferred to Jacksonville State. Poole signed a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2003. CHe was later cut by the Titans and picked up by NFL Europe.
S Andrew Purcell, Garner, NC- Played in 21 games for the Wolfpack. Recorded 15 tackles and two-tackles for loss during his career. Graduated a year early from NC State.
QB Philip Rivers, Athens, Ala- Rivers left as the career passing leader at NC State. He was recently named ACC male athlete of the year in 2004. All-American, All-Conference. First round draft choice by the NY Giants and traded to the San Diego Chargers.
DB Kerrick Sanders, Stone Mountain, Ga- transferred to East Tennessee State after the 2000 season.
S Victor Stephens, Webster, Tx- He had 31 tackles and three pass-breakups during 2003 with NC State. Was a spotty performer while at State and hoped to land a free agent contract in 2004 with an NFL squad. Actually signed with State in 1999 but spent first year at Hargrave.
LB Chip Thomas, Roxboro, NC- Left in 2002 after playing five games as a freshman in 2000.
S James Walker, Camden, SC- started seven games in 2000 but was declared academically ineligible and never returned.
DT Steven Williams, Wilson, NC- Never enrolled at NC State and ended up at Catawba. Had 37 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks in 2003.
