Pack Takes Solid Lead for NC Wide Receiver

Pack Pride has the latest on WR Geron James from Ashley High School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

NC State is keeping a watchful eye on WR Geron James from Ashley High School in Wilmington, NC. The talented wide-out collected 27 catches for 300 yards and four touchdowns as a junior and has attracted interest from numerous schools on the east coast. He's already off to a blazing start in 2004 and Pack Pride caught up with him for the latest.

I know you were excited to get the season underway. What kind of stats have you put up so far?

"Well, we've played two games so far. I've had seven catches for over 200 yards and four touchdowns."

Are you playing anything other than WR this year?

"Yeah, they want me to return kickoffs but I hadn't done that yet. I've also been playing CB and S. I hadn't got any interceptions yet but I think I've had about 9 tackles total."

Bring us up to date on your scholarship offers.

"I've got offers from Virginia Tech, Maryland and UNC. My coach told me that Wake Forest had offered but I hadn't seen the paperwork but I might have just missed it. East Carolina has offered me too."

Do you think any other schools might be close to offering?

"I think once I get my SAT score up- NC State and Georgia Tech have said they're going to offer."

You had a chance to camp at State this summer. What was your impressions of the Pack when you came up?

"When I went up to State, I thought we were just going to work out but me and Levin got a chance to tour the school. It was just amazing up there. I had a really fun time. They treated me and Levin like we were already part of the football team. It was real good up there."

What have the Pack coaches been talking to you about as far as what you might be able to do in college?

"They think of me as one of those players that they can throw the ball up and I'm going to go get it. They told me they think I'm an overall good receiver. I've got the hands. I've got the height. They just want me to get a little bit bigger so I'm going to try to do that. When I was at camp they told me if I could run under a 4.6 (second 40-yard dash) and get my SAT score then I would probably get offered. I went ahead and knocked out the run- I think I ran a 4.51 on the grass in my cleats."

What size are you at now and what's your best 40 time?

" Right now I'm 6-4 and close to 180 (pounds). I ran 4.38 in track cleats when I was doing track last year. I would say my average is about 4.4."

What are your top schools right now?

"I'm interested in NC State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech a little bit. I've been looking into LSU and Clemson because they've been sending me a lot of mail."

Any particular favorites out of that group?

"State's my favorite right now. I don't really want to be far from home. At State, they always have a good QB and plus, I'm trying to find a school that passes a lot and State does that. I mean, they can run it to do the job. Plus, if I don't make into the draft I want to major in Sports Medicine and they have that. They're just the all around package."

Any sense for who your parents like?

"My parents really like NC State and Georgia Tech. They've talked about wanting to move to Atlanta because we were down there this summer and they liked it a lot."
