Pack in Top 3 for Standout Safety

With 21 career picks, Shelby S Van Eskridge is receiving recruiting attention from numerous schools in the region.

Van Eskridge is a 6-1, 195 pound prospect with 4.5-second speed that was one of the state's top defensive backs as a junior. On the year he collected 96 tackles and six interceptions which gave him a career total of 21 picks. For his efforts he was named all-conference and defensive player of the year. Pack Pride caught up with Eskridge for the latest on how his season is going so far and recruiting.

How has the season gone so far and what kind of stats have you put?

So far, we're 2-0. I'm playing DB and wing-back. I've got one TD receiving and two rushing touchdowns. I'm not sure exactly how many tackles I've made but it's around 11 or 12. I haven't got any interceptions yet.

What are some of the schools that you're hearing from the most right now?

NC State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Clemson and UNC.

Who would you say are your favorites?

NC State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech would be my top schools.

We saw you made it to State for their game with Richmond. What were your impressions?

Actually, it was my third or fourth trip down but even from the very first time, I liked it a lot. I love the facilities. I got a chance to meet with some of the coaches and they seemed like really nice people. It was just a real relaxed atmosphere and I saw that people there really do love the Wolfpack. I love the way people support the program.

Which NC State coach is recruiting you?

Dick Portee.

Have the Pack coaches said anything to you about the possibilities of earning a scholarship offer?

Coach Portee told me to make sure my head coach sent them another tape so they could evaluate the film, and they might offer me after they get a chance to look at it.

You mentioned South Carolina. What do you like about those guys?

I got a chance to visit SC, and I really liked it down there. Plus, I would love to play for a coach like Lou Holtz.

Eskridge plans to be in attendance for South Carolina's matchup with Georgia this weekend and hopes to set up his official visits in the very near future. He projects as a full academic qualifier.
