One position NC State has had considerable success recruiting in 2004 is along the offensive line and those efforts got a boost recently when SuperPrep All-American and four-star OL Eddie Haupt of Merritt Island (Fla) High School told Pack Pride he planned to officially visit the Pack.
At 6-4, 290 pounds and boasting 5.1-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Haupt is a super talent that could project at either guard or tackle. He's established quite a reputation for being a tireless worker and those efforts have played a huge part in helping the Mustangs to a successful season and district championship.
"We've already clinched the district championship," said Haupt. "We're 6-1 right now. We hadn't scored a lot of points but we still dominate the teams we've played. They've got me playing pulling guard. Pretty much all of the schools recruiting me like me as a guard but some have said tackle and some have said center. State has said they like me as a guard or tackle."
Haupt has been considered a huge Florida lean for weeks and, despite the recent dismissal of head coach Ron Zook, still have to be viewed as the team to beat for the talented lineman's commitment.
"I like that they're (Florida) close, they have good academics and the football is good, said Haupt. "I've got a good relationship with my recruiter, coach Wickline (Florida OL coach Joe Wickline)."
As things stand now, NC State appears to be the only out of state school under consideration by Haupt. The Pack may be a decided underdog in this race but, as has been the case numerous times before, State will look to put it's best foot forward when Haupt makes his official visit up to NC State later this year.
"I'm taking a visit up to NC State on Dec. 3," said Haupt. "Coach Herring is the guy recruiting me and I like him. When he came down in the spring, I just liked him right away. I went up and saw NC State over the summer for just an unofficial kind of thing. I liked what I saw, so now, I want to take an official visit."
Another huge factor to consider with Haupt is that he plans to enroll in January which means his recruiting will be on the fast track between now and December. In addition to Florida and NC State, the senior lineman is considering Florida State, South Florida and Miami. Each of those have offered except for the Canes.
Haupt projects as a full academic qualifier and could possibly announce his college decision in December on Countdown to Signing Day.
