Scouting report from recruiting analyst Larry Blustein- "Graded out as well as any linebacker in the state after attending several off-season camps and combines. This is an athlete who makes plays, has great field presence and tremendous closing speed. Was timed in 4.56 (40 yards), and when you see him play, it's easy to understand why. At the end of spring, I said that any college fortunate enough to land this young may just be getting one of the best in the state. While most of the attention has been landing on teammates Avery Vogt and Dorian Munroe, this may be the one that coaches could be most impressed with over the long haul."

There is no secret about NC State's need at the LB spot for the class of 2005. The Pack did not sign a ‘backer in 2004. That fact, coupled with the departures of Pat Thomas and Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay has left somewhat of a void in the LB depth chart. However, the Wolfpack has targeted several of 2005's top prospects and recently added a new name to the list when they offered a scholarship to LB Eric Houston. Pack Pride caught up with Houston to find out where the Pack stands and who may land one of his all-important official visits.

It seems that NC State may have just recently offered you a scholarship. When, exactly, did that occur?

"State offered me about two or three weeks ago."

With your season over and attention more focused on recruiting, who are your top schools currently?

"Right now, NC State, West Virginia, Auburn, Clemson, Miami and Florida are the ones that stand out for me."

Which of those schools have offered you a scholarship?

"NC State, West Virginia and Auburn have all offered me."

Of the six schools that you mentioned, is any particular one standing out to you right now?

"No one stands out right now but NC State might have an advantage because I know a lot of players up there and they get a lot of players from down here."

Talk about NC State and what has helped them become a team that you have a lot of interest in.

"Everyone that goes up there has a shot to play right away- you just have to put the work in. They're a pretty good team but it just seems like they're young but I just like the way they play. Plus, Doc Holliday is recruiting me and he's a real cool guy. He seems like a guy that I can talk to."

Which LB spot is State recruiting you for?

"I'm not exactly sure. They just say they want me but I think they like me as an OLB."

It seems that you, Avery Vogt and Dorian Munroe are considering many of the same schools. Would you guys like to play together I college?

"We all pretty much want to go to the same school but if that doesn't work out we'll have no problem going to separate schools."

What official visits have you been able to set so far?

"I've got West Virginia on Dec 3. Me, Avery and Dorian are going to NC State on Dec. 10. And then I'm going to Auburn on Dec. 17.

What do you feel your strengths are as a LB?

"My speed and my nose for the football. I always know how to get to the ball and make the tackle."

Houston is solid in the classroom and projects as a full academic qualifier. He is undecided on a college major.
