It's no secret to those who follow recruiting that Williams, a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 21 defensive end prospect according to Scout.com, committed early in the process to the University of Florida. However, after the firing of head coach Ron Zook, Williams is now exploring his options.
"Well, we've just opened things up," he said. "We're going to see what Florida's doing, and we're going to take our visits and see if we can find the best place for us."
The "we" Williams refers to is himself and best friend Vladimir Richard, also a "soft" Florida commitment who is looking around. Both players have made it known that they are a package deal.
"Yes, we're definitely a package," Williams said. "You can count on that."
Florida still is a major player in their recruitments, and the other teams involved include: Tennessee, NC State, Auburn, Georgia, and Ohio State. Both players have already visited Tennessee, and Williams appeared to have had a great time.
"It was a good place," he said. "Brent Schaeffer was my host, and we clicked up there. He loves it up there. It was a good visit to Tennessee."
Williams and Richard have only scheduled one other visit, as they both will be in Raleigh this weekend visiting NC State.
"We're going to NC State this weekend on the 2nd or 3rd," Williams said. "That's the only one I've got set up so far."
Expect both players to go into the visit with an open mind as they are trying to find out more about the NC State program.
"Well, I really can't say too much about [N.C.] State until I get up there and see how the program is," Williams said. "Right now, I'm just talking with Doc Holliday. He came down to speak with us, and he seems like a real cool dude. I'm just going to go up there and see how it is to see if I like it or not."
When will Williams make his commitment official?
"Probably before signing day," Williams said. "It just depends. After I get done with my visits I'll just make up my mind."
