"I know NC State's a good school, and I'm really excited about it," Geron James said. "It's going to be fun taking my first official visit."
James's teammate at Ashley, super athlete Levin Neal, committed to the Wolfpack last weekend, and James feels that Neal made the right decision for him.
"It's a great school for him to go to," James said. "I remember when he got injured early in the year and State was the first school to contact him and let him know everything would be okay with his scholarship. I think that carried a lot of weight with Levin, and it probably felt good to him to know State liked him that much."
Is there a chance both players will remain teammates on the next level?
"We haven't talked about it much, but we'd like to do it," James said. "He's a wide receiver and cornerback, and I"m a wide receiver. So if we would go to the same school we could spend time working out against each other and getting better. It could work out well if that's how it happened to go."
James had a strong senior season for Ashley, finishing the year with 43 receptions for 920 yards and 17 touchdowns. Now that his season is over, he can focus on the recruiting process.
North Carolina's Brad Lawing was the first assistant coach to go in-home with James, as he did so last week.
"Coach Lawing from North Carolina was the first coach to come by my house," James said. "It was good. He told me a lot about the school, and what they did this year is what they are going to do next year. I have some interest in them."
Later in the week NC State's Greg Williams visited James.
"That was great," James said. "We just talked about what would happen if I came to State and what kind of schedules they have. We talked about tutors and what I need to get done right now."
James visits NC State this weekend, North Carolina on the 17th of December, and he's scheduled to go to Virginia Tech on January 28th.
Entering the official visits, does James have a leader?
"My leaders are NC State and Virginia Tech," he said. "They have both great teams and great coaching staffs.
"I love it up at NC State. I really like it up there. It's close to home and everything.
"Virginia Tech had a great season, and they always have strong teams."
The talented receiver admitted that he could make a decision prior to taking all of his official visits.
"I may decide early, but I don't have any control of that right now," James said. "I'm just looking right now, but if the feeling [to commit] comes it comes."
