Coach Yow has been with her team this week for games at Vanderbilt Thursday and at Clemson on Sunday. As a first phase of her treatment, Coach Yow has chosen to pursue a program of dietary and nutritional modification over the next eight days. In so doing, she will be away from the team for the games against North Carolina on Friday, Jan. 14, and against Virginia Tech on Monday, Jan. 17. She will return to the bench for the home game with Miami on Thursday, Jan. 20, and then intends to complete all of her coaching, recruiting and public service duties for the remainder of this season and for the future years of her long-term contract with North Carolina State University.
Yow earned her 600th win of her 30-year career with the Wolfpack Women on Dec. 2. Coach Yow owns a 34-year career record of 665-303 and is 608-284 at NC State. She is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and also coached the 1988 Olympic team to a gold medal in Seoul, Korea.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Yow," said NC State Athletics Director Lee Fowler. "We expect Coach Yow to resume her normal duties when she returns and we look forward to her coaching many, many years with the Wolfpack."
Associate Head Coach Stephanie Glance will assume head coaching duties until Coach Yow returns.
Coach Yow and her oncologist will hold a press conference upon her return to Raleigh to answer questions and address concerns.
