Quick Notes: NC State In The NCAAs

Here's some quick notes on the NC State Wolfpack as they enter the NCAA Tournament as a No. 10 seed in the Syracuse Regional.

  • THE PACK IS BACK IN NCAA TOURNAMENT: This season will mark the 21st that NC State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Wolfpack posts an all-time record of 29-19 in the "Big Dance" and has gone 24-18 not counting consolation games (since 1976).

  • NC STATE SENIORS COMPLETE THE SWEEP: After a 10 year absence in the NCAA Tournament, NC State's senior class has now led the Wolfpack to four straight invitations to the Big Dance.

Jordan Collins, Ilian Evtimov (Redshirt junior), Julius Hodge, Will Roach and Levi Watkins join just five other players in NC State's storied basketball history to advance to four straight tourneys.

    Here's a list of NC State's four-time tourney participants:

    Player Years in NCAA Tourney
    Quenton Jackson 1985, 86, 87, 88
    Vinny Del Negro 1985, 86, 87, 88
    Chucky Brown 1986, 87, 88, 89
    Kelsey Weems 1986, 87, 88, 89
    Kenny Poston 1987, 87, 88, 89

  • WOLFPACK IN ELITE COMPANY: Herb Sendek is now just the second coach in NC State history to take the Wolfpack to the NCAA Tournament four years in a row. Jim Valvano had a five-year run from 1985-89 and the legendary Everett Case had a three-year streak from 1950-52.

NC State is one of just 21 teams that have earned NCAA bids each of the past four seasons. This marks just the second time in school history that the Wolfpack has gone to four straight tournaments. NC State earned five straight bids from 1985-89 before the current streak.

Here's a look at the teams that have earned NCAA Tournament bids each of the last four seasons:

  • WOLFPACK LEADS NATION IN GAMES VERSUS NUMBER ONE SEEDS: NC State and Wake Forest are the only teams that have played three of the four No. 1 seeds in this year's tournament, but the Wolfpack has played more games against those top-seeded teams. Herb Sendek's squad has played five games against No. 1 seeds this season, once against Washington, twice against Duke, and twice against North Carolina (Wake played Illinois and North Carolina once and Duke twice).

Only three other teams have played two No. 1 seeds this season: Georgia Tech, Gonzaga and Oregon.

The Wolfpack has played eight games this season against the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds combined - the highest total in the field.
