Costner joins Wolfpack signee Courtney Fells as a 2005 Gatorade state player of the year. Fells averaged 23.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in his senior year to win the award for the state of Mississippi. It was the first such honor for Fells and Costner.
Costner was also named to the Parade All-American basketball team, which is made up of the top 40 basketball players regardless of high school class. Costner, a third-team selection, was the only Wolfpack signee selected to the prestigious squad. Last year, NC State's Cedric Simmons was a fourth-team pick.
After earning all-state honors the previous year, Costner has now been named Associated Press New Jersey state player of the year as he averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in leading Seton Hall Prep (30-1) to a state title. He scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the 48-40 victory over Christian Brothers Academy. Costner also led the Pirates, ranked sixth nationally by USA Today, to a 63-60 victory over St. Patrick's in the Tournament of Champions. The Wolfpack signee scored 31 points and snatched ten boards in the win.
While earning Player of the Year honors, Costner also was selected first-team all-state for the second straight season.
He inked with NC State in November after seriously considering Kansas, UCONN, Seton Hall, and Michigan among others.
Next up for Costner is the Derby Festival Basketball Classic, an Adidas-sponsored event held on April 16th in Louisville, Kentucky at Freedom Hall.
