Could a loss be what propels the East Carolina baseball team into the NCAA Tournament? Head coach Randy Mazey would like to think so. The Pirates tumbled against No. 23 N.C. State on Tuesday night by a 3-0 final, the exact same score as the match-up between these two clubs 20 days earlier. However, the reason Mazey sounded so upbeat after this ballgame in front of 3,708 spectators at Clark-LeClair Stadium was the performance of pitcher Chris Powell, a redshirt freshman who made his first career start. Powell lasted until he gave up a leadoff single in the eighth inning. Scorewise, the game still was in reach for the Pirates (28-20), and they didn't have to use a position player on the mound to get to that juncture. Read More

NC State Baseball Shuts Out East Carolina 3-0

Ryan Pond drilled a three-run home run and Andrew Brackman combined with Jason Duncan and Joey Devine on a five-hit shutout as NC State defeated East Carolina 3-0 Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The win was the third for the Wolfpack in four meetings with the Pirates this season and lifted NC State to 33-13 for the season. ECU fell to 28-20. Brackman (2-0), allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings of work. He threw 76 pitches before giving way to Duncan to start the sixth inning. In 12 innings against the Pirates this season, all in Greenville, Brackman has allowed no runs on four hits.
