Melvin Patterson is a wide receiver prospect from Alachua (Fla.) Sante Fe High School. Patterson, 6-3 and 205 pounds, caught 35 passes for 710 yards and scored seven touchdowns last season as a junior.

This season, they are breaking in a young quarterback and he has some younger teammates and it's time for the senior to be to show some leadership.

"The spring went well," said Patterson. "There was lots of enthusiasm out there and we have a young team and QB. They all want to learn and I have to show leadership. As far as recruiting it is exciting. Coaches came out but I tried to act like they were not there at practice and just go out and play."

According to Patterson he has scholarship offers from Florida State, Florida, Miami, Central Florida, West Virginia, LSU, East Carolina, North Carolina State, Indiana and South Florida.

"I probably like FSU, Florida and Miami the best. I change my mind day to day on my favorite. NC State is up there too.

"With Florida I love coach (Urban) Meyer and he is going back to what Florida football should be with lots of hard work… that's the bottom line. He is instilling that, hard work, back into the program and the focus of the game. You just can't waltz into Gainesville and expect to win and you just can't win on talent. You have to work and work hard and that is what Meyer is bringing more than anything and I like it.

"I love the program at Florida State. Coach (Bobby) Bowden and his coaching staff are as solid as they come. They have been so dominating over the years and they stress education more than people realize. I am very excited because I am going to camp there in July and see them up close.

"I just went to Junior Day down in Miami and that is a place where I feel like I am at home. I spoke at length with their business professor and I love their academic setup. Obviously I love their football program too. I also love the great family atmosphere that is down there in that program. It's unreal.

"I love the wide receiver coach at NC State, Dwayne Dixon. I have known him for such a long time that he is like a friend of the family. Then there is coach (Chuck) Amato who is from Florida State. They like to pass and I like to catch.

"Coach (George) O'Leary coaches hard and last season he had to see what they had. He pushes you and makes you work hard and they really push education.

"What can you say about LSU? That is one of the best places for college football and it's the SEC and a great school.

"I love the coaches at West Virginia. I have only talked with them on the phone but I already feel so comfortable with them."

Patterson has already camped at Florida and will camp at FSU and Georgia in July.
