Embattled University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill men's basketball "coach" Matt Doherty got a vote of confidence from an unlikely source this week -- North Carolina State University men's basketball coach Herb Sendek.
"Matt is a heckuva coach," Sendek said. "You have to consider a coach in context. When you look what he did this year with what he had, you can only shake your head in wonder."
Sendek continued. "For Doherty to coach that team
right out of the play-in game was nothing short of
miraculous. Tarheel fans should be proud of what he has accomplished."
When ACC coaches talk about Doherty, Sendek said, "We all agree, he's really tall. That and did you see that suit, shirt and tie combination he wore for the ACC sportsmanship commercial? Wow, I'll bet it gives Alexander Julian a migraine."
Prompted to return to the subject of Doherty's
coaching ability, Sendek said, "Oh, right, I forgot. Got bored already. Anyway, I hope to be coaching against Matt Doherty for years and years and years."
Doherty graciously shrugged off Sendek's comments,
saying the N.C. State coach only did what he (Doherty) would have done in the same position -- and in fact had done, just last year.
"Well," Doherty said, "look like Herb's got me -- I mean, got my back."
