Devon Freeman, 5-11, 197 pounds, 4.45 seconds in the 40, from Niceville, Fla is a RB that Pack Pride first introduced to NC State fans several months ago. Since, the all-state selection has attended several camps in pursuit of more scholarship offers and recently he updated us on his recruiting.
"I attended camps at Auburn and Ole Miss and we went to a passing camp at Hoover," said Freeman. "It's kind of hard for a RB to show much at a passing camp but some folks that were there said I was one of the best players in attendance. I think I showed them that I can catch the ball out of the backfield."
Having rushed for 1,179 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior, Freeman has already earned an offer from Ole Miss but he's hoping to land a scholarship from Auburn in the near future.
"The coaches at Auburn told me they really like me but they would like for me to pick up some size and speed," he said. "They said just to keep working hard and be patient."
As for NC State, the Pack has been in touch and they are under consideration at this point although Freeman admits he needs to learn more about the program.
"Actually, I just got some mail on Friday or Saturday from NC State," said Freeman. "I don't know too much about them right now but I could see myself playing for a school like that. I'd like to get to know more bout their program and the campus."
One possibility for Freeman is that he could move to DB once in college. He told us that Ole Miss has already touched on that subject.
"I haven't talked to any of the Ole Miss coaches since I was at camp but they were telling me they wanted me to come in and redshirt and then they might move me to DB. That would be okay with me. I've wanted to get some experience at DB in high school but I haven't been able to because they need me at RB."
For now, Freeman doesn't keep his desire to play for Auburn secret but he's watching several other schools just in case.
"Right now, Auburn would be my number one," he said. "Ole Miss would follow them. I also like Miami, Clemson and Alabama. I would put NC State at number six basically because I don't know much about them at this point."
