"I went up there Saturday," said Spikes. "I just watched the practice and stuff and came home. I talked to the coaches and players, and just hung around."
Spikes, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker from Shelby (N.C.) Crest, has visited Raleigh to check out the Wolfpack in the past. This time around, the jumbo athlete wanted to get a good feel for a N.C. State practice.
"Basically, the coaches wanted me to come up there and see how State practices," said Spikes. "That's the first time I've ever seen them practice. I liked the intensity [of the practice]."
Everything is still wide open for Spikes, whose massive scholarship offer list provides him a choice of just about any school. Don't expect his status to change, as Spikes puts his recruitment on hold for a few months to focus on his senior season and leading Crest to its third Championship in as many years.
"Probably, at the end of the year I'll take my [official] visits," said Spikes. "I might take some during the season, I don't know I'll have to see. It will be later though."
This Saturday, Spikes will lead Crest into the Border Showdown Jamboree to scrimmage Gaffney (S.C.). The following Friday, the Chargers will participate in the Cleveland County Jamboree, where they meet Hickory (N.C.) for their final scrimmage before the season.
A Scout.com four-star prospect, Spikes is currently the 77th ranked recruit in Scout.com's National Hot 100.
