Scouting Report - April 5, 2002: (Philip Pasternak * TSW)
Mario Williams has all the qualities seen in a great Defensive End. His super size and speed have him widely regarded as the best prospect, at his position, in North Carolina this year.

Williams earned much of this respect while playing out of position. Injuries at key areas forced him to play the Middle Linebacker spot for much of his junior year. In 13 games, he averaged 10 tackles and 1 sack per game while splitting time between the Defensive End and Middle Linebacker positions. His effort helped lead the Wildcats to an 11-2 record (regular season & state playoffs).

In an attempt to focus all his energy on football and school, Williams verballed early to the Wolfpack and became their first 2003 commitment. That, however, did nothing to keep some of the top schools in the nation from keeping an interest. Enter Tennessee.

While Mario is still committed to NC State, the Volunteers have indeed entered the picture and could be a factor before signing day. Until then, Pack fans everywhere will be keeping their fingers crossed.
