Despite becoming only the third ACC team to ever lead the nation in total defense (221.4 ypg), the North Carolina State Wolfpack couldn't generate much offensively and the team languished in the bottom half of the conference standings, going just 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the league. Chuck Amato's squad opened the season with a 42-0 pasting of I-AA Richmond and actually won three of its first four games, but the wheels fell off the cart after that, with losses in five of the next six affairs, including a stretch of four straight defeats. The lengthy skid was ended however, with a season- finale in which the Wolfpack destroyed non-conference foe East Carolina, by a score of 52-14. The defense was simply brilliant for NC State, ranking not only first in total defense, but also first in pass efficiency defense (91.8), second in pass defense (119.0 ypg) and ninth in rushing defense (102.3 ypg).
