Oliver Hoyte spent a relaxing holiday season at home in 2004, and he hated it. So did the rest of the N.C. State Wolfpack after failing to qualify for postseason play for the first time in Chuck Amato's five-year tenure. Losing four of the final five games left the Wolfpack with a 5-6 record that was the school's first losing mark since 1996. Hoyte, a senior linebacker, spent the two previous Christmas holidays in Jacksonville and Orlando, enjoying the VIP treatment of a bowl participant. He still received a trip to Florida last December, but it was only to spend the holidays at his home in Tampa, where he was inundated daily with news about the bowl experiences of Florida, Florida State and Miami.
