One of the top prospects from the state of Virginia is Isaiah Gardner from Virginia Beach (Va.) Salem High School. Gardner, 5-10.5 and 191 pounds, is one of the nation's finest running back prospects. Last season as a junior, Gardner rushed for over 1,100 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also caught 26 passes for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. "We play a spread offense so I am a lot like Marshall Faulk," said Gardner. "We spread the field and they use my speed and I score touchdowns. I love the open lanes. I have a little power and some moves. I will do whatever I have to do." According to Gardner, he claims a combination of verbal and written offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Clemson, Maryland, Notre Dame, Indiana, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, UNC, NC State, ECU, West Virginia, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Boston College and UCLA. "I want to find a school where I get a good vibe from the coaches. There has to be a good fit because it will be home to me. Right now, I like Michigan, Michigan State, Clemson, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State and North Carolina. I am still wide open . I want to narrow it down by football season. This is all so unexpected to me. I didn't know recruiting would get this big and this hard." Gardner just camped at Maryland and he will attend a team camp at ECU.

Scouting Report - April 14, 2002: (Scott Kennedy * BorderWars)
Isaiah Gardner is a running back out of Virginia Beach, VA that turned some heads at the Nike Camp in Chapel Hill. Posting a 4.49 forty in less than optimal conditions placed him among the top 7 at the camp, and his 34.4" vertical was tied for second overall.

The raw numbers don't even tell half the story though. Speaking with Gardner's coach at Salem, Chris Beatty, one is able to get a better understanding of how good a player Gardner is. "He's a burner," said Coach Beatty. "He had 10 touchdown runs over 40 yards last season. He had over 500 yards receiving too. We through the bal to him a lot out of the backfield, and he does a real good job of pass protection. That's one of the reasons I think he can play early next year; he is so good in the passing game as well as rushing the ball."

Gardner whose best 40 time is 4.37 uses his speed as his main weapon. "I'll do whatever it takes to get the score," said Gardner. "But I like to run around people; it's fun to get in to the endzone untouched. Barry Sanders was my idol growing up. He's the reason I started playing football. I don't have quite the wiggle that he does, but I like to move in and out like he did."
