Scouting Report - April 18, 2002: (Jamie Newberg * BorderWars)
Does the Blades name ring a bell? It should as Al, Brian and Bennie all starred for the Miami Hurricanes and for various teams in the National Football League. Now it's Bennie's son, H.B. (short for Horatio Benedict), time to shine. He will be one of the top defensive recruits from South Florida.

"I play at 100 mph," said H.B. Blades. "I am down and dirty out there. I do some jawing but I back it up. I am physical and play sideline to sideline. In South Florida, you have to have that mentality."

Blades did back it up and in a big way. He averaged 16 tackles per game in an 8-3 season. In a playoff loss to Miami (Fla.) Carol City he recorded 22 tackles. This season, he will play fullback as well as Plantation switches to a wing-t offense.

According to Blades he has one scholarship offer so far and that is from Michigan. He believes Southern Cal is on the verge of an offer. And right now, those two teams hold a slight lead. "I know I want to visit those two officially in December. I also like NC State and Northwestern. FSU, Florida and Miami I like a little but as well.

"I actually grew up a big North Carolina fan because I wanted to break all of Lawrence Taylor's records. Everyone thinks I am a Miami guy because of my family. I like them but I want to do my own thing. I want to find a place where I really fit in as a person and a player. I have to be comfortable."

Blades says he is planning to camp at Southern Cal and FSU. He is considering NC State and LSU as possible camping destinations.
