Focusing On Two Schools

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. --- While most North Carolina high school football fans are salivating over a possible third consecutive late playoff match-up between powerhouses Charlotte Independence and Richmond Senior, the Richmond Raiders are focusing more on the big picture – conference and state titles.

"We're looking for the gold this year," said Tavares Brown. "The conference is number one, then on to State [Championship]. Independence, that's down the road – we're looking at winning conference then states. When Independence comes, they come."

Richmond took a one huge step towards a Midsoutheastern Conference title this past Friday when the Raiders handed rival Scotland County a 41-17 loss.

Although the offense was unstoppable, a defense led by Brown, who accumulated seven tackles, halted Scotland's rushing game and contained their short passing attack that dominates most opponents.

"I did pretty good," said Brown. "I got on a lot of screen plays that we wanted to stop. They got a couple on us, though."

Brown, a 6-foot, 250-pound defensive lineman, now has 60 tackles (43 solo) including five sacks on the year.

Once his senior season concludes, Brown will shift his focus to his recruitment, where it appears to be a two-horse race between in-state archrivals.

"Between the offers I got right now, it's still close with [North] Carolina and [N.C.] State," said Brown, who also owns an offer from Maryland. "State calls me every Wednesday, and Carolina calls me Thursdays – I mean EVERY Wednesday and EVERY Thursday. They are showing a lot of interest."

Lacking much – if any – of a gap between his two favorites, Brown will use official visits to both schools to assist in his decision making process.

"I'm waiting for official visits after the season," said Brown. "N.C. State said they want to get me up there around November."

Brown has already unofficially visited both N.C. State (versus Virginia Tech) and North Carolina (versus Wisconsin) this season, and is planning on heading back to Chapel Hill when the Tar Heels host Virginia this weekend.
