"Michigan is probably my leader right now," said the athlete out of Edgewater High School in Orlando, FL. "They've been recruiting me hard and they've offered me. Their season has been tougher than I thought it would be but they still have a great program.
"I'm going on an official visit on November 19 to see their game against Ohio State. To be honest, one of the reasons I've been showing so much interest in them recently is because I'm just excited about that game."
While Mathews will take in one of the best rivalry games in the nation on his official visit to Ann Arbor, other schools will get a chance to impress when he takes his other visits.
"Oh yes, I definitely plan on taking my other officials. The only other one I'm sure of is Florida State. I'm working on finding a time that will work for me and for them. That's another school that is recruiting me pretty hard."
What are the Pack's chances with the 6-3, 190-pound receiver?
"I really like NC State," he said. "I just don't know that much about them yet. That's basically the way it is with most of the schools recruiting me. They're one of the schools that has offered me, so that's in their favor. When I set up my other officials it's a place I'll strongly consider. Coach Dixon was at my last game and that's important to me. I really want to have a good relationship with the wide receivers coach going into college. That, and the quality of education offered, will be the most important things for me."
On the season Mathews has caught 45 passes for 757 yards and 12 touchdowns in leading Edgewater to the state playoffs. What are his strengths as a pass-catcher?
"I'm just a playmaker. I'm confident when I have the ball in my hands. I feel like I can't be stopped, no matter who's covering me. Every time the ball gets in my hands I'm a threat to bust a big play. I think that's what most coaches like about my game."
In addition to Michigan, Florida State and NC State, Mathews is interested in South Carolina, Ohio State, Miami and Alabama.
