"LeSean McCoy had over 60 scholarship offers entering his senior season," Bishop McDevitt head coach Jeff Weachter told Pack Pride. "He had 889 yards rushing and broke his ankle in the fourth game of the year.
"Although we missed him, we went on to have a great season even without LeSean. We were undefeated and fifth in the country but lost this past weekend 14-13 in the semifinals."
Despite the early injury, McCoy remains a hot commodity. Regarded as a five-star recruit and the No. 4 running back in the country, he has already taken official visits to USC and Virginia Tech. This weekend he will head to Raleigh and check out the NC State Wolfpack.
"LeSean is taking a trip to NC State this weekend," Weachter said. "He's talked about maybe visiting Alabama and Miami too. I don't think he's going to take an official to Penn State. He's been there a lot unofficially."
Wondering how NC State has emerged as a player in McCoy's recruitment? Don't forget that Wolfpack starting quarterback Marcus Stone is a Bishop McDevitt alum and a friend of the McCoy family.
"I think the success Marcus has had played a factor," Weachter said. "When Marcus was a senior, LeSean played four games on varsity for us as a freshman. LeSean's older brother, LaRon, was also one of Marcus's top wide receiver targets when Marcus was a sophomore. LaRon is playing for the Arizona Cardinals now."
Stone is 4-1 as a starter for the Wolfpack and played a major role in NC State reaching the postseason.
"I got the chance to see parts of four of his five starts," Weachter said. "Marcus has a lot of confidence about himself, and we talk about once a week. His big thing is just getting comfortable in the pocket. Obviously the second half of games have been good for him and that is when he's playing very well."
Bishop McDevitt defensive tackle Jason Kates and cornerback Aaron Barry are also expected to visit NC State, but coach Weachter was unsure if it would be this weekend or later in the recruiting season.
"They are planning on visiting NC State, but we thought that we would be playing this weekend. Coach Cignetti must have got up with LeSean to set that one up, but I know Jason and Aaron plan on visiting NC State too."
