Tight end Dennis Godfrey was impressive back during the spring when he had a solid showing at the invitation-only Shrine Bowl workout held at UNC. Over the course of the year he's obviously continued to work and looked even more impressive physically at this past weekend's Shrine Bowl. As a result, numerous schools have ramped up their interest in the three-star prospect.
Although he didn't figure heavily into the passing game for the Tar Heel squad, Godfrey was used often on offense as a blocker and lead the way on several nice runs. He also got some time at defensive end and seemed to hold up well with the double duty. Godfrey told Pack Pride that he's used to extensive playing time.
"I'm used to playing both ways so it was alright with me," said Godfrey. "The main thing was we came out with the win."
Although he made an early verbal commitment to Wake Forest, at the very least it would appear Godfrey is going to explore his recruiting options.
"I just got word that Virginia has offered me a scholarship and so I'm going to take an official visit there on January 22. I'm just going to take my official visits and see what teams have to offer."
Early word had NC State making a concerted push for Godfrey but, as of now, it would appear State may have cooled, at least somewhat.
" I'm looking at Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and I'm going to Wake Forest," he said. "I've got one official visit still open. I was looking at NC State before but they haven't given me an official visit yet so I don't know about them."
