Safety Marquel Pittman from Purnell Swett High School in Pembroke, NC put together a solid senior season in which he had 50 receptions for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense, he was named conference defensive player of the year after tallying 94 tackles and four interceptions.
At Saturday's Shrine Bowl, Pittman backed up at safety and didn't get a lot of playing time. However, although thin now at 6-3, 175-pounds, the senior defensive back looked like a player that could develop into a solid prospect with time. Several schools have shown increased interest recently and we caught up with Pittman after the Shrine Bowl to see how his week in Spartanburg went and to get an update on his recruiting.
"The week went really good," said Pittman. "Everyone here was good. Everyone was fast and it was a good week of practice for me.
"I'm hearing from Virginia, South Carolina, East Carolina, Gardner Webb and NC State called and came by the school. So far, Virginia and William and Mary have talked about setting up official visits. Virginia is supposed to come by the school Monday. Right now I'm liking Virginia and South Carolina. Virginia's got a good program and some good recruiters."
