NC State has made the wide receiver position huge priority for the class of 2006 and the latest prospect to surface on the Pack's radar is Donald Bowens from St Petersburg (Fla) High School.
At 6-3, 195 pounds and boasting 4.6-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Bowens is a sizable target who played double duty for St Petersburg in 2005. The talented wideout caught 25 passes for 400 yards and four touchdowns while doubling as an outside linebacker and being named team defensive player of the year.
The Wolfpack entered the picture with Bowens over the last month and has shown increased interest ever since with wide receiver coach Dwayne Dixon leading the Pack's effort. Bowens talked with Pack Pride about his interest in State and his upcoming official visit to Raleigh.
"I'm planning to be at State this coming weekend," said Bowens. "I like that they're in the ACC and not too far from home. Well, at least they're closer than some of the other schools on my list.
"Coach Dixon is recruiting me and he's a real cool guy. He's down to earth. State hasn't offered me yet but coach Dixon said they probably would on my visit."
Bowens has already taken official visits to Iowa State and Indiana and hopes to set up a visit with Virginia later this month. Those three schools will be playing catch up to two foes who are actually quite familiar with each other after matching up recently in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
"My favorite schools right now are South Florida, NC State and Virginia," said Bowens. "I would say my top two are NC State and South Florida."
Bowens talked about the Bulls.
"I like that they're close to home and they're a real up and coming program," he said. "I feel like I could go in there and contribute and help build the program up.
Bowens added that he plans to wait until signing day to make a decision.
