Hargrave Lineman Will Walk On at NC State

Pack Pride talks with offensive lineman Cole Baucom about his plans to walk on at NC State.

NC State will have one of Hargrave Military Academy's talented offensive linemen walk on to the Wolfpack's football team for the 2006 season.

OL Cole Baucom, a 6-4, 275-pound prospect, originally from Vance High School in Charlotte, NC, matriculated to Hargrave this past year to hone his football skills. He recently tested well at Hargrave's combine for college coaches back in December when he ran a 5.1-second 40-yard dash, 4.85-second shuttle and 26.5-inch vertical leap.

Baucom just started playing football in the tenth grade and spent his final two seasons at Vance as a varsity starter.

Baucom received interest from several schools, but he told Pack Pride that there was no secret about which school he planned to attend. While life can be tough for a walk-on, Baucom says he's ready to do what he can to help the Pack's program.

"Most of the time at Hargrave, it was pretty well known that what I wanted to do was go to State, so I don't know how much that curtailed interest (from other schools)," said Baucom. "A few schools showed a lot of interest at the combine, but that was too late in the game for me to get interested in anyone.

"Right now I just want to put on good weight, maybe thirty pounds, earn a little respect, get better, and work my way up the depth chart one step at a time."

Baucom has already enrolled at NC State and will major in Engineering.
