When Nathan Franklin committed to NC State in July the it seemed like the Wolfpack found the future of their kicking game.
The 5-11, 160-pound kicker from John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC had a stellar junior season and followed it with a great senior campaign. In 2005 Franklin once again displayed his ability as a place-kicker. He also improved his punting average to 45 yards per kick. 90% of his kickoffs were touchbacks.
Last weekend Franklin was at NC State on his official visit – the only such visit he's taken.
"I had a great time at State," said Franklin. "It's where I knew I wanted to be right from the start, and it was nice to get up there and see everything. Hanging out with the players was definitely the highlight of the trip.
"My host was John Deraney and we got along really well. We got up at 7:30 that first morning and had breakfast. We went to some meetings and talked to the coaches. Coach Amato is a great guy. Spending time with the guys there was really a lot of fun. They all seem like good guys."
Franklin is an excellent student, boasting a 3.2 GPA and a 1680 on the SAT, according to the new scoring scale.
"Coach told me that he wanted me to come in with the attitude that I'm going to get playing time somehow. I know they've got a guy that has done a good job, so I wouldn't have a problem being redshirted. I think I'm going to show a lot of improvement once I start practicing up there. I just plan on preparing myself so that if they need me, I'll be ready."
