"We haven't had many Division-1 players at Eastern Alamance in football," said head coach John Kirby. "But, I know Matt can play at that level. I'm just now starting to get out film on him, and he had a huge year for us.
"Matt is a hard-nosed kid. He has a nose for the football. Sometimes he would rather have contact than make a play on the ball. He just likes to hit. We play him at safety, and I'm not sure if he's not an outside linebacker on the next level."
Thompson was very productive as a junior, registering 126 tackles, four forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and two interceptions. An instinctive player who is a ferocious hitter in the defensive backfield, Thompson admits that he just loves contact.
"I'm a hard hitter," he said. "I get the job done. I just like to hit. That about sums it up."
On the recruiting front, Thompson has been hearing from NC State, Georgia Tech, East Carolina, and Wake Forest, as his head coach is just now sending out his junior film. NC State has already observed him in action, and the Wolfpack holds a very early lead.
Thompson has ties to the NC State program, as his brother is enrolled at NC State and his uncle, Ricky Turner, played defensive back for the Wolfpack in the early 90's.
"State right now is my favorite because my brother goes there," said Thompson. "My uncle, Ricky Turner, played DB for them too. I have a lot of family that roots for State and that is who I have always liked.
"I've been up there for a couple of football and basketball games. They told me I was one of the top recruits for them in the junior class. I'm going to go up for their Junior Day on the 25th and meet with all the coaches."
NC State tight ends coach Curt Cignetti is recruiting Thompson for the Wolfpack, and although he has yet to offer him, he has expressed heavy interest in Thompson.
"Coach Cignetti likes him a lot," said coach Kirby. "I took Matt's film up to State for them to watch, and coach Cignetti told me that they like him a lot."
Would Thompson commit if NC State offered him a scholarship?
"I'm leaning towards making a commitment if they offer early," he said. "They have a good engineering program, and I'm looking into doing something like that. I'm going to weigh my options, but I think I would commit if they offered me a scholarship."
Thompson plans on camping at NC State, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech. He will also attend the Scout.com combine and one of the upcoming Shrine Bowl combines.
