One player sure to garner his fair share of recruiting attention over the next several months is up-and-coming tailback Darryl Vereen from North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, North Carolina.
At 6-0, 196 pounds the rising senior ripped off a blistering 4.38-second 40-yard dash at a Scout.com combine recently as well as a solid 4.25-second 20-yard shuttle. That performance was enough to get Vereen recognized as one of the event's top performers and has helped him emerge as one of North Carolina's hottest rising stars.
Recruited as both a running back and safety, it was on offense where Vereen made his mark last season. He finished off the year with 1,200 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns despite missing three games due to a broken hand.
Although he has received serious interest from several major schools, Vereen said he's still hoping to generate more interest as the May evaluation period approaches.
"NC State, UNC, South Carolina, Clemson, Virginia and Florida are the main schools I'm hearing from," said Vereen. "Duke has offered me, but I just got a highlight tape sent out so hopefully the offers will start coming in. Carolina and State seem like they're real close to offering."
With a stellar combine performance under his belt and recruiting just now beginning to take off, Vereen says it's way too early to start naming college favorites.
"I don't even know who my top schools would be right now," he said. "I'm really just trying to get to a place where I can get on the field quick.
"I think some of the bigger schools like Virginia Tech and Virginia are looking at me as a safety but the other schools like South Carolina and NC State are looking at me for RB."
Although he's hesitant to name any particular favorites, Vereen did talk about three programs he's keeping a very close eye on.
Virginia Tech- "I've always liked Virginia Tech. I haven't been up there but I plan on going. It's just something about Virginia Tech that I like."
NC State- "I've been up there and I like NC State a lot. Coach Portee, he's a real good person. I just talked to him yesterday and he's a real laid back guy I guess until practice starts. But he's a pretty cool person. He told me he liked my tape."
UNC- "I've been up there and they treat you real good. It was nice and I liked it. Coach Bunting, he's real cool."
It's almost a given that Vereen will see his offer list take off over the summer and he's got several one day camp stops planned to help him do just that trips planned to Virginia, Florida, Virginia Tech, NC State and UNC.
