Eight days into its search for a new men's basketball coach, N.C. State targeted John Calipari of Memphis with a full-court press that included a Sunday morning trip to Memphis via private plane by NCSU chancellor James Oblinger and Wolfpack athletic director Lee Fowler. Three high-ranking N.C. State sources confirmed that the school presented Calipari with a lucrative, long-term contract offer that was similar in structure -- but not identical in financial numbers -- to that of Texas coach Rick Barnes, who on Thursday turned down an overture ($2 million-plus) from the Wolfpack that would have made him one of the five highest-paid coaches in college basketball. The sources said the offer to Calipari was for more than $1.7 million per year on average, assuming completion of the deal, but declined to be more specific. Read More

The most surprising aspect of N.C. State's basketball coaching search is the belief by some that it's a waste of time for the school to court big names. What a bunch of hogwash. To say State is acting too big for its britches by aiming high is exactly like saying that South Carolina had no business trying to hire Steve Spurrier as its football coach. Or that Rick Pitino, having once coached the basketball team at Kentucky, would never consider Louisville. Read More
