After winning an AAU game in triple overtime in Boston, Dereck Whittenburg and Sidney Lowe were together when a feisty Italian coach put his arms around them. Jim Valvano told them he loved the way they played, and that he wanted them to play for him at Iona. They did play for him -- after he was hired at N.C. State, where he displayed the same charm that won over Whittenburg and Lowe that day. Sixteen years after Valvano's tenure ended, some say N.C.
