One of the top cornerbacks in the region has been looking at NC State for a while, and the success of Wolfpack players in the NFL Draft hasn't hurt the Pack one bit.
C.J. Fleming, a 5-11, 172-pound cornerback from Highland Springs, Virginia was in Raleigh last year for NC State's game against Virginia Tech and has been following both schools ever since.
"I've been looking at those two plus a bunch of others. NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, Maryland, Tennessee and West Virginia have been recruiting me for a long time. Recently I've started to hear a lot more from Florida, Louisville and Georgia, so I'm open to those schools too.
"My coach has wanted me to think about making an early commitment, and I thought that's what I was going to do for a while. But right now things are wide open and I don't think I'll be ready to decide any time soon."
Fleming has a great combination of athleticism, technique and toughness for a cornerback, and doesn't shy away from contact at all while on the field. He has good leaping ability and is solid in coverage. What does he like about State?
"They've recruited me right from the start, and they've offered. I've had them right up there at the top of my list with a few others for a long time. I know in 2004 they had the No. 1 defense in the nation, and they just sent a bunch of defensive players to the NFL. They're going to want people to come in and help them out right away.
"I think NC State is a place where they let their athletes shine. Their defense is designed to just put guys in the right place to make big plays. They play aggressive. I don't want to go some place where I'm going to have to ride the bench until my junior or senior year, and I think at a place like NC State I could play early."
What does he like about the other schools recruiting him?
"Basically all the schools I'm really looking at either have a good program and send guys to the NFL every year, or I think they're going to be able to do that in the future. I want to play big time college football, and I'm going to end up somewhere that lets me do that."
In the next week Fleming will sit down with his coach to determine if he will take unofficial visits over the summer.
NOTES: Fleming has offers from Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia among others.
COACH QUOTE: "C.J. is the hungriest football player that I've ever coached. He has a drive that no other kid I've ever coached had. Combine that with his physical skills and you have a star in the makings. He has all the physical tools. He's just a great kid to be around." -- Highland Springs Head Coach Scott Burton
