DL Sam Jones from Fuquay-Varina (NC) High School rode quietly under the recruiting radar until a solid performance at the Shrine Bowl Super Combine held at UNC a couple of weeks ago. The 6-5, 262 pounder looked solid in drills and moved extremely well for a player his size. NC State had offered the rising senior prior to the combine and it didn't take long for Jones to decide where he wanted to attend college.
"I committed to NC State today," said Jones. "Me and my father went over to State and had a meeting with coach Stroud about academics. Me and my father had talked about it, and I had prayed about it and felt in my heart that was where I needed to be.
"Coach Stroud, really all the coaches and me and my dad were ecstatic with the decision."
While Jones made his collegiate decision today, it was actually a trip to NC State several weeks ago that help solidify the Pack as his top school.
"The very first time I went there was about a month ago," said Jones. "The feeling I got was just like a welcome home. The players, coaches, everything was great."
With his decision now behind him, Jones said Wolfpack fans won't have to worry about his straying from his commitment.
"I'm done with recruiting," said Jones. "All I want to do is focus on my academics and make sure I do what I've got to do there. I'm set on the Wolfpack."
Jones reported that he had offers from East Carolina, UNC and Tennessee in addition to the Wolfpack. He was also receiving interest from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Penn State, Clemson and Auburn among others.
He is currently undecided on his college major.
