Pack Pride will take a weekly look at how NC State may recruit the various positions for the class of 2007 and the prospects that are currently mentioning the Pack as one of their top schools. The following should be considered a rough guide only as many factors will affect the actual numbers at each position between now and signing day next year. Based on numbers available currently, the Pack will likely sign between 22-25 players in next year's class. All information contained in this article is the opinion of the staff at Pack Pride and should not be confused as being information from the coaching staff at NC State. It is also based on information known at the current time. Several aspects of this listing will certainly change as the recruiting season progresses.
Key losses...Pat Lowery
Pack is likely to sign...3-5
Number signed at this position over the last two years...3
How important is this spot in relationship to other positions...Critical
How does the Pack's early recruiting pool look: Grade C
Although NC State only loses middle linebacker Pat Lowery after the 2006 season, that number is extremely misleading. The Pack has under-signed at linebacker for several years and has missed on a ton of prospects. State is now in a position where they'll be looking at walk-ons and players moving from another position to help contribute at linebacker. NC State simply has to land a solid class of linebackers this year and they need to be players that are ready to play.
Pack Pride's Dream Recruiting Class at Linebacker: Alex Kaufman, Kevin Rouse, Carlton Johnson, Melvin Ingram, and Maurice Harris
On the board and listing NC State:
Barquell Rivers ...Rivers was touted early as one of North Carolina's top linebackers. The Pack has reportedly offered and has been mentioned as a school under consideration but UNC may hold the lead.
Melvin Ingram ...Underrated linebacker prospect from Richmond County with great measurables. NC State has offered and appears to be in solid shape along with UNC. Grades have been a concern.
Carlton Johnson ...May be Florida's top linebacker prospect. NC State has offered but it will be extremely difficult to get him out of Florida.
Pat Lazear ...State offered Lazear early but off the field troubles may hinder his recruiting. It may be a few months before it becomes clear which schools will still pursue him aggressively.
Marquis Boone ...State has yet to offer Boone who is from Jacksonville, Fla but are keeping a close eye on him. They could become a team of contention should they decide to offer.
Dwight Hunt ...Doesn't have prototypical size for a linebacker but this Florida prospect is high on State and put up good numbers this spring.
Calvin Sutton ...From same school as 2005 target Johnny Patrick. Pack was mentioned early and could become one to watch.
Maurice Harris ...NC State has offered and is in great shape with Harris. A rising prospect who burst on the scene at the NIKE Camp, Harris hails from Homestead High and is approaching double-digit offers.
Adewale Ojomo ...Another of Florida's top linebackers. State has offered and was one of Ojomo's top schools early. They'll have to work to stay in his lead pack of schools.
Kevin Rouse ...One of the midwest's top linebacker prospects with nearly 20 offers. He has not released a list of favorites, so it's impossible to know where State stands currently.
Alex Kaufman ...Pack was the first to offer and has led previously for this Ohio prospect. Has recently picked up an offer from Minnesota as well. Teammates with fellow Pack recruit Solomon Thomas. Both will officially visit NC State on Nov 4.
Alonzo Winfield ...Winfield is a sleeper linebacker prospect from NC that we suspect you'll be hearing more about in the coming months. We expect that State will become quite involved but his list of top school is not known currently.
