The offensive line has been a major recruiting point of emphasis for the NC State coaching staff so far in 2006 and they've landed on the favorite's list for one of Virginia's best.

Offensive lineman Khalil Latif, 6-2, 276 pounds with 5.2-second speed in the 40-yard dash, hails from Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia. The rising senior projects as an offensive guard on the next level and has picked up nearly a dozen offers. Schools making early offers include NC State, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee, UNC, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, East Carolina and Wake Forest.

Rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com, Latif finished off 2005 with a slew of postseason awards that included all-district, all-region, all-state and all-metro honors. That kind of recognition has helped lead to an avalanche of college attention, but Latif has been able to narrow that list somewhat to a current top six. He recently spoke with Pack Pride about his top choices.

"Right now, I like Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, Florida and Ohio State," said Latif. "I would say Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech are recruiting me the hardest."

The Pack has had some success landing offensive linemen from Virginia and there's no secret they'd like to add Latif to the mix. Getting him on campus for a visit will be key for their chances with the Terps, Cavs and Hokies apparently holding an early lead.

"I really like their program down there," said Latif. "They've got some nice coaches and I'm hoping to get down there for a visit sometime ths summer. If I can't make it this summer, though, I'll probably make an official visit later this year."

One factor that will be important in landing Latif will be the opportunity to play early. That's one of the primary considerations for the school he ultimately chooses.

"I really want to go to a school where I can have an impact early," he said. "Whether I play as a freshman or have to redshirt that first year, I want to be able to get on the field early."
