Smith Has a Top Seven

Wide receiver Jay Smith from Kempsville, Virginia has been one of the fastest-rising wideout prospects in the nation after a solid combine showing over the spring. He has previously been an NC State lean but has recently backed off of those statements. We've got the latest on the schools he's focused on currently.

6-2, 195-pound Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver Jay Smith has a current top seven. Smith says this "most likely is" the final seven, although he didn't rule out a possible change down the road. We caught up with the talented 4-star prospect to find out which programs are in the top seven, where he plans to go this summer and when a commitment could be made.

First things first: the top seven. In alphabetical order, the schools that are currently up there are Clemson, Miami, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech. In general, there were three reasons why these programs made the cut.

"Location and the way the offenses are run. Obviously, a quarterback being there the same time I'm there is important too," Smith said. "Most of the schools in my top seven have that. Like Clemson told me they have the #2 quarterback in the nation. It is important."

Asked to list specific things he likes about each program, Smith said…

"Clemson is an up-and-coming program. They just brought a lot of talent into the program."

"I liked them as a kid. They've had players such as Santana Moss, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp… it's a great program."

N.C. State

"I grew up around N.C. State, and I've always enjoyed being there."

Notre Dame

"The wide receivers there seem to be doing real well. They have the #1 quarterback in the country coming in."

"Coach Fulmer came down to meet me during the Evaluation period. That showed me he really wants me there. I just like Tennessee. C.J. Fayton always had good things to say about them."

"Al Groh is a good coach. I've had friends like Antonio Appleby and Jason Fuller go there. They all say good things about it."

Virginia Tech

"Everybody knows about the Vicks, and that's where my interest started."

In terms of unofficial visits, Smith most recently visited N.C. State for camp and UVa when he went there for a track meet. He plans on heading to Virginia Tech this week (heading there on July 8th along with QB Tyrod Taylor) and hopes to visit Miami later this summer.

"I went up there for a track meet," Smith said of UVa. "It was a really big campus. It was nice up there.

"For Virginia Tech, it will be my first time visiting there. I want to see how the offensive scheme is and how the campus is and everything."

Earlier on in his recruitment, Smith had expressed a desire to commit before the beginning of his senior season. That has changed.

"I think I'm going to commit after my senior season," said Smith, who plans to take official visits first before committing anywhere.

Smith and Tyrod Taylor have developed a good relationship. Will Taylor's decision have an impact on Smith?

"It could possible, but I'm not sure," Smith said. "I have to weigh all of my options."

Smith wants to major in Architecture and this will be a factor in his decision. He certainly is talented in the field, as he recently earned a Autocard 2000 certification and has taken advanced high school courses related to Architecture.

Smith is focused on his academics this summer and is currently in summer school, which also could limit his visit options.
