Williams Keeping Options Open

NC State and East Carolina were the first two schools to offer versatile in-state prospect Jonathan Williams, but he might be a long way from narrowing down the field.

The 6-1, 190-pound running back from Rose High School in Greenville, NC is likely to receive several more offers before the recruiting process is over, and because of that he wants to keep all of his options open. That's no knock on the Wolfpack though.

"I just want to have as many choices as I can when it's time for me to decide," said Williams. "I like State and East Carolina a lot, but I'm not in a rush to make a decision."

While Williams grew up following UNC basketball, an offer from the Heels would not mean an automatic commitment.

"I'm trying to make sure everyone knows that I'm still undecided, not just on where I'm going, but where I want to go. I'm going to listen to what every school has to offer, take some visits and then make my choice. But not before then."

Most schools are recruiting Williams as a running back, though he has the ability to play in the defensive backfield. While he does not have blazing speed, he has more than enough quickness to beat linebackers to the corner. He has tremendous work ethic, but is still learning the ins and outs of the game.

Last year Williams split time at running back, but managed to pound out more than 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns, helping Rose to a perfect 16-0 record. Look for similar stats this year.

"I think I can continue to improve," said Williams. "There's always room for improvement, and I don't think I'm anywhere near my potential. One thing working in my favor is that I leave it all out on the field every play. I bring that winning attitude every game."

Williams is also hearing regularly from Maryland, Clemson and South Carolina among others. Does he know which schools he plans on paying visits to in the future?

"I've been thinking about that, and I'm going to probably decide where to go in the next couple of weeks. I'm probably going to visit the in-state schools and maybe the schools in South Carolina. I'll have to wait and see but I'll know soon."

COACH QUOTE: "I think his strength is unbelievable athletic ability. He can run, jump and is very strong. He's a quick learner and he understands the game. I think some things that he needs to work on are holding onto the ball and maybe a little more mental toughness." -- Rose Head Coach Greg Thomas
